Newcomer Settlement Program

Every refugee deserves a future.

For every newcomer, the first few days in Canada are a critical and memorable time. First impressions are formed, and vivid memories of these days will remain with them for the rest of their lives. CAIR's employees and volunteers usually do all they can to help make the arrival process and initial days and weeks as smooth as possible by focusing both on practical and emotional needs.

The aim of the Newcomer Settlement Services is to assist CAIR's sponsored immigrants in settling and integrating into Canadian society. It includes the delivery of direct services to immigrants, such as orientation, translation, interpretation, referral to community resources, para-professional counselling, and general information.

The first couple of weeks should include assisting with:

  • Picking up refugees from the airport
  • Apply for a Social Insurance Number
  • Permanent Resident Card
  • Verify the Interim Federal Health has been arranged
  • Visit a doctor and dentist
  • Apply for Provincial Health Card
  • Open bank account(s)
  • Explain financial support and budget
  • Navigating the neighbourhood and using public transit

CAIR helps Newcomers to access Settlement Services:

  • Language assessments and language classes.
  • Intercultural adaptation.
  • Assistance with legal issues.
  • Job search workshops and training.
  • Out-reach in schools and the community.
  • Counselling services - family, health, trauma, psychological issues and crisis intervention.
