Community Sponsorship (CS)

As a community sponsor, CAIR does not have a limit on the number of sponsorship applications we can submit per year, as long as we can demonstrate that we have sufficient financial and settlement capacity. To increase sponsorship opportunities, individuals and for-profit and not-for-profit businesses can partner with us to help with settlement and provide support to refugees.

Community sponsors can only sponsor applicants who have been recognized as refugees by the UNHCR or the state authorities of a foreign country (such as the country where the applicant currently resides). Proof of Refugee Status Determination (RSD) must be submitted with the application package.

Most of our community sponsorship cases are "Family-Linked", which means that there is a guarantor or guarantors in Canada willing to look after the refugees after they arrive, providing the necessary financial support until they are resettled.

This is how we achieve our large sponsorship volume. However, CAIR sponsors a good number of refugees each year through our Global Refugee Resettlement Program, and this is entirely at our expense.

CAIR offers support to co-sponsors by providing assistance with applications. We provide access to pre-arrival settlement information and post-arrival counselling, orientation, and other settlement services.

Our services include, but are not limited to:

  • Offering workshops, info sessions and training for co-sponsors
  • and submitting applications and supplementary documents for sponsors and refugees
  • Offering resources for sponsors and refugees, including Pre-Arrival and Post-Arrival support services
  • Providing connections to other resources and settlement organizations
